Training Programs

The MARCE sponsors a variety of training programs designed to educate and enhance the capabilities of MARCE researchers. These courses, listed below, are offered periodically based on researchers's needs and requests. Watch the News section for upcoming training sessions and dates.

BSL-3 Laboratory Biosafety Training. This practical, three day-long course will be offered at the University of Maryland annually. It features lectures, group learning activities, demonstrations, as well as hands-on training in BSL-3 Laboratory biosafety issues. Aerobiology and small animal handling under containment will also be covered.

Media Training for Bio Scientists in Preparation for Public Health Emergencies. This one day-course is hosted by the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, and can be held at various MARCE institutions via the “mobile media training cart”. The goal of the training is to prepare scientists to become effective subject matter communicators for the media and public during public health emergencies. These courses impart crisis and risk communication tools for scientists who may be called upon to talk to the media or prepare someone to talk to the media and to translate complicated scientific information in a format understood by the public.

Training in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices and Process Development This intensive two-day course, offered each year at the Sanofi Pasteur Vaccines manufacturing facilities in Swiftwater, PA, covers GMP, GLP, process development, regulatory issues and manufacture. In addition to a working tour of the production facilities, the MARCE scientists will benefit from didactic and group discussion sessions organized by the industrial scientist process developers.

Training in the Complexity of Response to Biological Emergencies. The University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security will plan and host a one-day workshop conference where national and international subject matter experts will hold seminars on how they prepare for and how they will respond to a bioterrorist attack or an emerging infectious disease outbreak. The workshop conferences will be highly interactive, allowing MARCE scientists to discuss issues in detail with the public health and emergency response subject matter experts.
